Dramatic Learning through Real Play

Purpose

The purpose of training is to help people learn skills and behaviours they can apply effectively in the workplace. Video recorded role plays are widely used methods of reinforcing learning by giving delegates the chance to apply their skills and knowledge. The problem with conventional role-play is that it feels false and unnatural when delegates play roles against each other. This can make the learning less effective.

At Associated Training and Consultancy we regularly employ talented professional actors in what we call Real Play. This achieves much greater impact, realism, fun and effective learning. Our clients tell us that the results achieved through this method are literally dramatic. We often write briefs for Real Play, tailored to the situation and needs of clients and then direct actors on their improvised performance in their roles played either with course delegates or with other actors in Forum Theatre.

Advantages of Real Play

- Highly innovative approach to blended learning

- Professional actors perform roles that the delegates control

- No inhibiting ‘role plays’ for the delegates yet the learning experience is complete!

- The delegates get to:

  • Brief the actors
  • Pause the action and redirect them towards better results
  • Apply practical skills from the course contents on realistic scenarios
  • Debrief the actors to absorb the learning
