TELEVISION STUDIES CAN BOOST YOUR BUSINESS

Business leaders in Newbury are frequent targets for the media. With large firms like Vodafone and Bayer in town, TV crews are often to be seen filming interviews in Northbrook Street.

However, if the camera crews descended on your business, could you be sure that your starring appearance would go well? Would you feel at all nervous? Would you know what to say, how to say it and how to promote your business without sounding 'naff'?

Happily, people from Vodafone and Bayer have received the benefit of practicing their TV skills in the safety of local studios. Based just north of Newbury, in Compton, is Media First, Britain's leading media training organisation which helps prepare business people for TV and radio appearances.

"When people arrive at our studios they are often nervous," said Helen Ward, Media First's Managing Director. "But when they leave they are full of enthusiasm and are actually looking forward to being interviewed."

Media First has helped all sorts of people cope with their media appearances, from Chief Executives of some of Britain's most well known companies, to the self-employed, to nurses in local NHS Trusts. "There is one common link to all these people," said Helen Ward, "they all say that they have hugely benefited from the realism we provide in our studios. Everyone feels as though they are actually on the TV or the radio."

Training courses at Media First are interactive, fun and are run by practising journalists and broadcasters. People on the courses learn how to get their message across, reduce their nerves and ensure they say the right things. Courses also deal with attracting the media in the first place and how to provide interview subjects that will get editors rushing for their notebooks.

One of the key elements that comes up time and time again is the need for preparation. Most people who go one TV and dislike the experience have usually not planned what to say sufficiently well. Media First courses provide you with a clear guide as to how to plan media interviews effectively. The courses also provide some other essential tip. These include:

  • Be concise - TV interviewers are usually only looking for 20 seconds of material
  • Be lively - people want to watch and hear enthusiastic and interesting people
  • Be focused - only talk about one thing. Just make a single point rather than tell people everything there is to know.
  • Be personal - put yourself into the interview as you will really connect with your audience.
  • Be positive - your audience prefers to hear you say positive things, so avoid talking about negatives.
