ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN
Accidents, ill health, dangerous occurrences, near misses and property damage can have high human and financial costs. They often cause unnecessary misery, threaten someone's livelihood and may affect the viability of a company no matter what the size.
It can often come as a shock to realise, just how much accidents and ill health can cost from causes, which are almost entirely avoidable. Compensation payments and increased insurance premiums are only part of the costs, there are also the indirect costs such as: production disruption; equipment damage and downtime; the costs of investigating and reporting; lowered morale and bad public relations.
A study by the UK HSE suggests that accidents often account for 8% of a company's turnover and naturally this comes straight off profits. Depending on margins some organisations need to double turnover (or more) to re-claim that lost profit. The smaller the business the bigger impact will be, a serious accident could put a company out of business.
There is without doubt a clear financial, as well as moral, argument for addressing the underlying causes of accidents and ill health throughout an organisation. It makes good economic and business sense to train all personnel from shop floor, office to Board level.
