Who will benefit: Managers and anyone who is responsible for implementing or carrying out appraisal meetings within their organisation.
Objectives: By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Recognise the purpose and benefits of an organisation implementing a meaningful and effective appraisal process
- Prepare effectively for the appraisal interview
- Follow a three stage approach to conducting the interview
- Provide effective feedback, both motivational and corrective
- Set SMART objectives
- Use a range of key communication and interpersonal skills to carry out a successful appraisal
Module One - Appraisals in Context
- The purposes and benefits of an effective Appraisal process
- Appraisal format – the three main stages
Module Two - Preparing to Appraise
- Reviewing the appraisee’s job role, standards of performance, previous objectives and outcomes
- Identifying areas of optimum and minimum performance levels
- Planning and preparing – what to prepare:
- Questions, feedback, key objectives, meeting strategy, logistics and the appraisee
Module Three - The Appraisal Meeting
- Opening the meeting
- Reviewing past performance / objectives together
- Recognising good and exceptional performance
- Identifying areas of poor performance together and planning ways to improve
- Agreeing and setting SMART objectives
- Summarising and closing the meeting
Module Four - Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- Effective questioning techniques
- Active listening
- Body language
- Influencing techniques
- Remaining assertive
Module Five – Follow-up to the Appraisal Meeting
- Action planning
- Setting milestones
- The importance of ongoing feedback and support
Module Six - Theory into Practice
- Where the course is delivered on a bespoke basis the organisations own appraisal process documentation can be introduced and role-plays, using professional actors, can be designed around typical situations relevant to the organisation.
