Who should attend?

This course is aimed at those responsible for manual handling risk assessments. It will give participants a basic understanding of the factors necessary to complete a manual handling risk assessment, and ensure their own safety and that of their colleagues and staff they supervise. The course is based upon the principles of safe moving and handling of loads known as the 'kinetic' approach to manual handling, and includes the following:

  • Legislation - the Health and Safety at Work Act and Manual Handling Operations Regulations
  • How to risk assess manual handling
  • Avoiding unnecessary lifting and implementing safety controls and procedures to avoid injury
  • Practical demonstration and exercises of safe lifting techniques

Delegates will undertake a number of practical manual handling risk assessments throughout the session. As this course is very interactive it is advised that delegates are reasonably fit and able to take part in the majority of practical manual handling activities, and wear suitable clothes for the occasion.

Each delegate will be issued with a workbook to assist them both during and after the course which will contain information, guidance and forms to assist manual handling risk assessors.
