SMSTS Courses

Who should attend an SMSTS Course?

The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme, or SMSTS for short, is a health and safety course which is intended for project managers, site managers and senior supervisors, as well as proprietors of smaller companies. Lasting five days, the SMSTS course will provide attendees with the knowledge required to comply with legislation and regulations regarding a construction site, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

A broad range of topics are covered on SMSTS courses, such as undertaking suitable risk assessments for a construction site, scaffolding, electricity, fire safety, confined spaces, CDM and much more. This makes SMSTS training essential for construction site managers in order to comply with all associated legislation, as well as ensuring a safe construction site, which is extremely important as the sheer number of dangers means that those working in the construction industry spend their time in some of the most hazardous of working environments.

CITB SMSTS courses also provide an excellent basis and foundation for further progression onto other courses and qualifications, with those obtaining an SMSTS qualification often going on to further study and qualifications such as the NEBOSH Construction Certificate. An SMSTS course will provide you with a good understanding of the basics, so even if you don't want to go onto higher qualifications, you will still have a good grounding in health and safety.

Aims and Objectives of the SMSTS Course

At the end of the CITB SMSTS course, delegates should be able to:

  • Manage health and safety on site in accordance with the current legal provisions and legislation, as well as within the context of their particular management or supervisory roles.
  • Develop an understanding of their responsibilities and accountability for site health, safety and welfare.
  • Recognise that a safe construction site is efficient, economical and productive, and so is in the interests of all.

  • SMSTS Course Content

Key topics of the Site Management Safety Training Scheme include:

  • Duties under The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2007
  • Duties under The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
  • Identification of on site hazards COSHH / Working at Height etc.)
  • Site safety monitoring

  • SMSTS Course Tutor

Our SMSTS course tutors are qualified and experienced health and safety professionals, with an appropriate background in risk management and delivering engaging health and safety training. Our trainers hold numerous appropriate health and safety qualifications such as the NEBOSH General Certificate, as well as teaching qualifications such as the City & Guilds PTLLS certificate to ensure the high quality of their teaching.

    Duration

The SMSTS course is delivered over five consecutive days. Delegates must attend all days in order to obtain the SMSTS certificate.

We run all of our SMSTS courses over five consecutive days rather than day release or distance learning. This achieves the best pass rates as delegates are taking the assessment whilst the information is fresh in their memories. In fact, we have lost count of the number of people who have come to us after spending money on a distance learning or day release SMSTS course with other providers and finding that they were not able to pass the exam at the end. Just because it may be cheaper or more convenient does not mean it is better for achieving what should be the main objective of doing the course in the first place; obtaining the qualification.

    Certification

During the course, projects are undertaken in groups and constantly assessed by the tutor. At the conclusion of the course, delegates are required to undertake a short multiple choice exam assessment. Delegates who successfully complete the projects and assessment are awarded the CITB ConstructionSkills Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate.

Only those providers such as ourselves who have been accredited by CITB ConstructionSkills are allowed to offer CITB SMSTS training and SMSTS training courses.

    Scheduled SMSTS Courses and Cost:

We run the CITB ConstructionSkills Site Management Safety Training Scheme SMSTS course across the UK in Nottingham, Central London and Reading. Unlike some providers of health and safety courses, all of our open course prices include exam fees, certification costs, on-site car parking and study book(s), as well as a buffet lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Some SMSTS training providers also take the study books back at the end of the course, but on our SMSTS courses, delegates take away and keep the study book at the end of the course for future reference and to assist them back in the workplace.

  • SMSTS London - As the largest city in the United Kingdom (UK), London also has one of the highest amounts of construction work taking place at any one time. This means there is high demand for SMSTS training in London.

  • Related Training:

  • COSHH Training - Construction sites are highly likely to contain hazardous substances somewhere on site, either used directly or produced as a by-product of construction activities. This means those attending SMSTS courses may also benefit greatly from COSHH training as well.

  • Manual Handling - SMSTS course attendees who work on a construction site are highly likely to be moving heavy or awkward loads at some point during the day. Manual handling training will equip site workers with the knowledge required to move loads correctly and minimise the chances of musculoskeletal disorders such as sprains and muscle pulls.

  • NEBOSH Diploma Courses - Some of those attending an SMSTS course may wish to progress to other health and safety qualifications. A NEBOSH Diploma is one of the most prestigious, and demanding, qualifications available.

  • Sharps Training - A construction or demolition site is a hazardous environment with a number of risks. One of those risks comes from sharp objects or implements, meaning that care and attention is required to avoid injuries such as cuts and lacerations. There may also be a risk of sharps injuries from discarded needles and syringes, particularly if the site has been abandoned for a while. Sharps training can make workers aware of the risks that they may encounter on site, as well as giving site managers a greater understanding of the dangers that face those for which they have responsibility for the safety of.

  • Accident Investigation - Obviously the whole point of attending an SMSTS course in the first instance is to try and prevent an accident or incident from happening. Unfortunately, no amount of health and safety training, risk management or control measures can fully eliminate the possibility of an accident; so when one does happen, it is important that lessons are learnt to prevent the same thing from occuring again, with possibly even more severe consequences.
